Your donation will support the following:
1) Medical care for the sick.
As you’d have seen in the media some of our health systems are becoming overwhelmed – meaning accessing medical care is really hard and oxygen is in short supply. We want to make sure that people in our communities can get the help they need, when they need it.
2) Full wages paid to our staff throughout lockdown.
This is still one of the most effective ways we can help our people. This money goes directly into the hands of people who need it most, and from there, it spreads throughout the community. As Radha said last lockdown:
” I am so grateful to receive my salary. I am able to support my family, siblings, and take care of my ailing mother. I couldn’t have asked for more.”
3) Provide food and masks to keep our communities fed and safe.
Many people in our communities will have no way of getting income during lockdown. People are hungry. They need food. In cramped communities like ours social distancing is often impossible, so masks are really important too
4) Access to education.
This one really worries us!
Most children in our communities have not been able to go to school for over a year now and that could stretch out for another year yet.
Unfortunately, many kids will never return. Some will be forced into marriage, others into getting a job. Even the fortunate ones who do manage to return will be over a year behind their peers as they haven’t had access to devices to access online schooling.
We are currently risking another generation being locked into poverty and forced into bad awful choices. Our young girls and boys deserve an education. They must have access to schooling if they are to have a decent shot at a better future.
What can your money really do?
$15 could provide reusable cotton face masks with soap and sanitizer
This includes making and distributing masks to households. We aim to give two masks to each person so they can wash one and wear one. In crowded slum communities this protection is so important.
$45 could provide enough food to feed a household for a month
The food parcels include items such as rice, dhal, flour, mustard oil, spices, noodles, soybeans, chickpeas, potatoes and other vegetables. With so many people in our community without work right now these food parcels are the only thing keeping some families afloat.
$300 could pay one of our seamstress’s wages for a month while she can’t work because of COVID restrictions
West Bengal has just entered full lockdown. Continuing to pay our staff full wages during this time means they can support their families and neighbors and their small purchases help to support the wider community.
$180 could provide learning materials such as workbooks, stationery and access to online teaching devices for children who can’t attend school right now
Providing devices for online learning is a delicate one, but if we don’t want these kids to fall even further behind we think this is the best option. We will work closely with the community to make this as effective and fair as possible. We will also be providing traditional workbooks and stationery to make sure they can extend their online learning.
$1350 could purchase an oxygen concentrator for those unable to get to a hospital.
Oxygen is crucial and in short supply, for those that are unable to get to a hospital due to travel or expense, an oxygen concentrator could save their life.
$2150 could help to cover the medical expenses of someone in our community who requires hospitalization and critical care because of COVID.
Obviously medical expenses vary hugely from individual to individual, but we want to help provide for this massive need right now. For some people, full hospitalization has been, and will continue to be a lifesaving last resort.
** These are examples of how your donation will be used. We are committed to delivering the most appropriate response for our community, this means the actual response may differ slightly from the above as the needs of our community develop. Should we receive more funds than we can responsibly spend on this response, additional funds will be spent on education programs – as we have identified education as a crucial ongoing need in our communities.
